I’ve been lucky enough to call Key Largo my second home for 30 years. It’s where I learned to ride a bike, it’s where I spent countless weekends and summers soaking up the sun like a lizard on my grandparent’s dock, and where I swam for hours on end in the canal where their house without any worries about what was beneath me.Today, it’s still where I’m able to come to get away from the Miami madness and forget about real life for a bit.
This year, I decided to ditch the city lights & stilettos on NYE for some laidback fun in the sun and it was the best decision ever – minus a little fomo. I just got back from a ‘Florida Tour’ where I visited family near Gainesville and later made a stop in Orlando so getting back to my natural habitat of sunshine and the salty air felt real nice.
We started the trip down in the Keys with lunch at Shipwreck’s Bar & Grill – a favorite little local spot on the water that’s sort of off the beaten path. I hadn’t been back to the Keys since before Hurricane Irma, so I was happy to see them up and running again. It was also nice to do my part and support the local economy while eating some bomb ass seafood.
When you’re down in the keys, it’s easy to hop from key to key, so on Sunday we drove down to Islamorada and stopped at Robbie’s to be basic & feed the tarpon. I actually hadn’t done this in years so it was fun to take the kids & watch nervously as they stuck their arm out over the docks, bait in hand. Warning: The tarpon are the least of your worries. Beware of the greedy pelicans who will literally rip the fish right out of your hand before the tarpon even realize what’s going on.
All in all, the trip was short but sweet. I celebrated the first of the year just how I wanted to – out on the water, sun on my face, wind in my hair. The fam & I rented a good ole’ pontoon & had ourselves a little midday pontoon party. If you’ve never been on a pontoon, it’s the perfect party boat! We cruised around the different waterways, basked in the sun, ate some food, and popped champagne, obvi. Happy New Year!
